Bryn chose West Springfield High School in West Springfield, Virginia for his education. During his time there, he threw for 3123 yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior. While he was in his junior year, he guided the Spartans to the 6A Northern Region Championship game where the Spartans lost 58-34 to the state champion Westfield Bulldogs, led by Mike Glennon, a quarterback.

After completing high school, Bryn went to the University of North Carolina in 2009. Before pursuing his higher studies, Bryn worked out for the New York Yankees of the MLB. He wanted to compete for both of the school’s baseball and football teams but unfortunately, he decided to concentrate and pursue football.
He appeared in several games as a backup behind T.J. Yates in 2010 during his freshman season. Bryn managed to become North Carolina’s starting quarterback as a redshirt sophomore in the football season which took place in 2011.
He completed 22 of 23 passes in his first game as North Carolina’s starting quarterback and set the records for passing accuracy. In 2011 during the regular season, Bryn completed 212 of 308 passes for 2769 yards along with 23 touchdowns. Bryn’s quarterback rating ranked among all NCAA Division FBS quarterbacks.
During the 2012 season, Bryn completed over 65% of his passes for 3356 yards and 28 touchdowns including 7 interceptions. These interceptions were ranked among the lowest in NCAA FBS among eligible quarterbacks. Last but not least, Bryn completed 26 of 41 passes for 363 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was named Honorable Mention All-ACC by the media and coaches.
